The Who is Who was compiled as an additional tool for the field of African Art, a compendium of names mend to be informative and not offensive in any way. It sprang forth from of the idea to make a contribution towards a more cohesive and annotated provenance for those of you who are interested in the field of African sculpture. Circa 15,000 names are listed. These names have been compiled from 75 years of auction catalogues, and from approximately two thousand books and exhibition catalogues which included the names of authors/scholars/travelers/explorers/field collectors/collectors. It is NOT an address list, but is meant to be used as a reference guide for background information.

Following the name one will find a brief description that does not aim to be conclusive at any time, e.g. authors cannot be listed with all of their publications, and therefore only one title is mentioned. We are aware of the fact that there are authors listed who are maybe not directly involved in African Art, but who are of interest for their anthropological or historical studies. Some shall be removed in the coming edition and others will be included.

Where available, a picture will be provided. If you are mentioned without a picture and you would like to provide us with one to be incorporated, please send this to our editor (simbaloes@gmail.com).

If, for some reason, a personal entry is incorrect or incomplete, please contact our editor Loes Jansen: simbaloes@gmail.com. Corrections can only be made for your own entry. Suggestions are always welcome for other or new entries.
